The Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus) is the only member of the shrike family endemic to North America. They range widely throughout the US and Mexico. Their diet consists mainly of large insects, and because they don't have the talons of birds of prey, they kill their meals by impaling the insect on on sticks or thorns, earning their nickname "the butcher bird."
