"Birds will give you a window, if you allow them. They will show you secrets from another world - fresh vision that, though it is avian, can accompany you home and alter your life. They will do this for you even if you don't know their names - though such knowing is a thoughtful gesture. They will do this for you if you watch them." ~ Lyanda Lynn Haupt, Rare Encounters with Ordinary Birds

Turkey Parade
Last time I took B (my life model, the cockatoo) to camp in Otis Orchards, a group of wild turkeys crossed the road. (Why? To get to the other side, presumably.) It was like being stuck in bison rush hour in South Dakota, except with turkeys.
Some interesting bits about wild turkeys: males can have "harems" of up to 20 hens; they forage on the ground, but sleep in trees; a turkey's eyesight is three times better than a human's. They're tall and lanky, and they look very different from the big white Thanksgiving birds.
And they're beautiful to watch. I'd gladly get stuck in this kind of traffic more often.
Doodled from a photo in a bird guide at the library.
