"Birds will give you a window, if you allow them. They will show you secrets from another world - fresh vision that, though it is avian, can accompany you home and alter your life. They will do this for you even if you don't know their names - though such knowing is a thoughtful gesture. They will do this for you if you watch them." ~ Lyanda Lynn Haupt, Rare Encounters with Ordinary Birds

Baeolophus atricristatus: Black-crested Titmouse
The black-crested titmouse is cute. I admit it... I go for cute. It's a small bird that lives in the Southern US and Mexico. And it's cute.
I saw a photo of the black-crested titmouse in this month's issue of Birds & Blooms and I had to try to doodle it. This little one fought me every step of the way. Funny headgear can obscure the shape of a bird's head -- you think it's difficult to draw something you can see, try something you can't.
Doodled from a photo by wildlife photographer Rolf Nussbaumer. (The photo is way cuter, by the way.)
