"Birds will give you a window, if you allow them. They will show you secrets from another world - fresh vision that, though it is avian, can accompany you home and alter your life. They will do this for you even if you don't know their names - though such knowing is a thoughtful gesture. They will do this for you if you watch them." ~ Lyanda Lynn Haupt, Rare Encounters with Ordinary Birds

Sitta pygmaea: Pygmy Nuthatch
I saw a new bird yesterday. Just as I turned the corner to walk into the park, I heard a ruckus in one of the pine trees.
It was a PAR-TAY, and all the cool birds were there, including a female Downy Woodpecker and a bunch of Robins... and a teeny, tiny bird with gray-blue wings and buff underparts.
It was a Pygmy Nuthatch. They're about 4" long and they like to hang out with other Pygmy Nuthatches. One of the things that makes them distinctive: they can hang upside down to forage (and make eyes at photographers).
Doodled from a photo on Jonathan Brennecke's Flickr photostream.
